ESS Collaboration

18/06/2025

PRIVAT has contributed to the production of two insertable beam stops for the ess proton accelerator in Lund (Sweden).

The manufacturing of the two beam stops resulted from the extensive collaboration between multiple teams at the ESS and at several European companies including Proactive R&D and PRIVAT in Spain.

The beam stops are beam-interceptive devices, movable by pneumatic actuators and water cooled. The beam-interceptive components are operated under vacuum and subject to ISO5 requirements.

In particular, a key component is made of TZM (Titanium-Zirconium-Molybdenum);

It is a hollow cylinder with a diameter of 120mm and a height of 400mm.

Due to its heaviness (38 kg) and the tight tolerances on the dimensions of the grooves for the cooling channels, the TZM component was precision-machined by PRIVAT using a 5-axis CNC machine.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), a multidisciplinary research facility that will be based on the world’s most powerful accelerator-based neutron source, enabling scientific breakthroughs in research related to materials, energy, health and the environment, and addressing some of the most important social challenges of our time.
